The Worldwide Logo Design Competition for the U.N. World Urban Campaign

UN-Habitat, with sponsorship from Veolia Environment, is launching an international competition for the design of the logo for the World Urban Campaign. The logo winner will be announced at WUC’s official launch during the 5th World Urban Forum, March 22-26 2018 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Three logo finalists will be chosen by an international jury of renown designers and urban specialists. The three finalists and the members of the jury will be flown to Rio to participate in the launch of the World Urban Campaign as part of the closing ceremony of the World Urban Forum. Cash prizes will be given to each finalist on the stage of the 5th World Urban Forum.

The World Urban Forum has become the world’s premier gathering on urban issues. Some 15,000 leaders and representatives of government; local government; and the private, professional, academic and civil society sectors from more than 100 countries are expected to attend its 5th session in Rio de Janeiro, 2010. Several hundred accredited journalists are also expected to cover the Forum.

The logo should symbolize and represent the initiatives of the World Urban Forum. It should also suggest the principles, objectives, participants and audience of WUC.

The design of the logo:

  • Include either the name or initials of the World Urban Campaign/WUC.
  • Must NOT use elements of any existing UN logo.
  • Should also be suitable for systematic use (as a secondary logo) together with the UN Habitat’s logo.
  • Should be simple
  • Function in different cultural settings.
  • Function in all anticipated usage environments (e.g. Internet sites, e-mailings, hard copy, projected image);
  • Function in different color environments
    • black (100% only, no screens or transparencies) on white background
    • color on white background
  • Function in different sizes, from miniscule to enlarged applications when reproduced through simple technical means (e.g. low resolution black and white photocopy).

The logo has to impart the message or the meaning of the symbols. It should be attractive, recognizable and memorable for various audiences – mass media and the general public.


Deadline for submission of entries is 1 March 2018 at 23:59 -8:00GMT. No entries sent after this time will be accepted.


Only one submission per designer or studio accepted.

Submit logo files according to the following specifications. Submissions not meeting these crietria will not be accepted.

  1. A single image file including both B&W and color versions of logo on a white background (no transparency), in either .GIF or .PNG format, placed in a 400 x 600 pixel format with a resolution of 72 dpi.
  2. A single multi-page PDF. No other files accepted. Set for high resolution.
    • PDF file should not exceed 10 MB.
    • Convert all fonts to outline (vector).
    • contains the following, and in this order and with the following page restrictions:
      1. Page 1: Logo in Color
        • If logo specifies Pantone, please note PMS values in documentation.
      2. Page 2: Logo in Black & White
      3. Page 3&4: Logo shown in use
      4. Page 5: Documentation
        • Summary description or explanation of the logo symbolism, designer’s intent.
      5. Page 6: Biographic information of designer(s) or studio.

Finalists will be notified by 9 March, 2018.

We will contact the finalists directly. Please do not contact regarding the award status.

The winning entry will be announced and presented on 23 March 2018 at the Public Launch of the World Urban Campaign at the 2010 5th World Urban Forum. It will also be included in UN publications/ websites, in some of the publications/ websites of the UN’s partners for WUC, as well as in the Urban World Magazine.


The prizes to winners will be as follows:

  • Winner $5,000 plus ticket to Rio.
  • 2nd Finalist: $3000 plus ticket to Rio.
  • 3rd Finalist: $2000 plus ticket to Rio.


  • By entering this competition, the designer assigns the rights to UN-Habitat to use each submission for non-commercial promotion of the World Urban Campaign. Unless a submission is selected as the winner, each designer retains all intellectual property considerations associated with their submission
  • Entries should not violate any intellectual property, including, but not limited to patents, trademarks, and copyrights. If selected as finalist, the designer must certify that the entry is original, created solely by entrant, and no other person or entity holds rights to the entry and its components.
  • In consideration for the prize money received, the winner agrees to transfer all applicable intellectual property considerations to UN-Habitat for the sole promotion of the World Urban campaign.
  • Any modifications made to the identity selected will be done by the designer who created the entry.
  • The winning designer will have first right of offer for any paid design work arising from and related to the application of the selected identity.
